Chapter 17. Publishing a Web to a Web Se... > Design Corner: Dynamic DNS

Design Corner: Dynamic DNS

The capability to host a web through a cable/DSL or even a modem dial-up account is possible through a technology known as Dynamic DNS. Dynamic DNS, in effect, tells the Internet whenever your domain name is associated with a new IP number, letting you host a web even if your IP address changes, as it does when you connect via most ISPs, including broadband.

Note

You might be thinking that you've paid for an Internet account with unlimited access—why don't you just get a separate phone line, dial in, and leave your machine connected 24 hours a day, seven days a week? Forget it. Your ISP knows all about these tricks and probably has an automatic disconnection ready to go. Infact, if you read the terms and conditions that are part of your account, you might very well find that your access isn't truly unlimited and that you can be kicked off your ISP if you stay online for too long.
