Chapter 17. Publishing a Web to a Web Se... > Understanding Web Servers

Understanding Web Servers

No matter how well designed and full featured your web might be, it is of no use whatsoever if nobody can see it. You have to place your web on a server to make it a part of the World Wide Web or your organization's intranet. A server is a computer that contains Web server software and (ideally) a full-time, high-speed connection to the Internet. This computer can be on a machine running any operating system for which Web server software is available.

Note

For full FrontPage functionality, you need the FrontPage Server Extensions installed on the server along with the Web server software itself, and not all servers support these extensions. See the section "The FrontPage Server Extensions," later in this chapter for clarification of this important issue.
