Design Corner: Finding and Deciding on a Web Hosting Service

Selecting a WPP can be an exercise in frustration, simply because there are so many of them to choose from. A site such as InternetList.com (http://webhostlist.internetlist.com/) offers ratings of WPPs and provides useful browsing. Look also to Yahoo!'s section on Web hosting (http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/Communications_and_Networking/Internet_and_World_Wide_Web/Network_Service_Providers/ Hosting/ /), remembering that the list here is for services with or without FrontPage Server Extensions. You can find ads for WPPs on Web pages (look for banner ads in particular) and in computer magazines, as well as business and hobby magazines.

Before making a decision, go to the WPP's site and read everything about what you might be getting and what you might be paying for it. Test the customer service by e-mailing a couple of questions to the contact address and seeing how long it takes to get a response. Check for extra charges for such features as additional e-mail accounts, RealMedia service, Internet chat services, shopping carts, and so forth. And be sure the price you're quoted on the site or through e-mail has no special conditions attached to it. For example, the monthly price showing for the selected hosting plan is frequently based on you paying an entire year up front. If you want to try the service out for three months, you'll usually be paying more per month to do so.
