The Object Family Tree

Of course, JavaScript does not only allow you to invoke functions within the Web page. A key option that JavaScript offers is the capability to access information within a Web browser via specific objects inherent to the browser. These objects allow the scripts to monitor information about the Web page and browser or change these characteristics.

No object in the Web browser's Document Object Model (DOM) stands alone. Each object is related in one way to another object and can be referenced by a scripting language such as JavaScript. This relationship has been determined from a top-down approach to the browser window. Everything that you view inside the window is part of the window. Therefore, the window object is the topmost object in the hierarchy for the Web browser objects. Figure 23.1 illustrates how these objects are related to each other.
