Chapter 6. Giving Your Web a Theme > Using Themes for a Consistent Look and Fee...

Using Themes for a Consistent Look and Feel

Consistency sells, especially on the Web. People want to move from page to page on a site and see consistent graphics styles and text formatting, consistent writing, and consistent degrees of information wherever they go. Consistent sites appeal to visitors for a number of reasons, but two stand out. First, we're all used to consistency in published materials; when the look of a magazine or newspaper changes, for instance, it's big news to the regular readers. Second, consistency helps situate the visitors by letting them know in a variety of visual (and even aural) ways that they're on the same site as they were during the last click.

FrontPage lets you create instant consistency through its packaged themes— predefined formatting of the graphics and text of a single page, multiple pages, or the entire Web site. Alternatively, you can create your own themes by modifying the packaged themes. Each theme sets the colors and formats of all graphical and textual elements in the page(s) or site and also lets you specify the graphics files you want to use for all graphical elements. For example, you can set the colors for the background, the banner text, each heading level, hyperlinks, and table borders, and the font style and size for your navigation buttons and body text.
