Multimedia File Formats

Multimedia has become more common on the Web as broadband (high-speed) Internet connections have become more widely available. However, 70% of North Americans are still using dial-up connections at speeds of 56KB or slower, and it takes a long time to download the typically large multimedia files on such connections. Keep this in mind when you're deciding what multimedia, if any, to use on your Web site.

If you're going to use sound, keep it under control and remember that not everyone has the same audio tastes that you do. Moreover, while multitudes of people download or play music online from the Internet, that doesn't mean they want to hear your favorite tune when they arrive at your Web site.
