Design Corner: Basic Page Design Principles

There are some fundamental principles of good text layout and hyperlink design. If you keep the following in mind, you won't go too far wrong with basic page creation.

  • Use whitespace on a text-heavy page.

  • Avoid long pages that require endless scrolling.

  • Choose a meaningful title for your page.

  • Write clearly and pay attention to spelling and grammar. Confused language and spelling mistakes reflect poorly on you.

  • If you choose different colors for visited and unvisited links (say red and blue), test the results to ensure the two colors can be distinguished in any display the viewers are likely to use. When in doubt, keep the link colors at their defaults.

  • Keep your navigation controls consistent; for example, a go-to-home-page button should look the same everywhere on your site.

  • Insert alternative text for images and for graphical navigation controls. Some people run their browsers with images turned off to download pages more quickly.
