Designers Corner

Running your own server isn't nearly as easy as the producers of Microsoft, Netscape, IBM, or other server software and hardware would have you believe. In fact, it's a demanding, often grueling chore that can cast you into the murky world of high-tech problems faster than you'd ever thought possible. Thankfully, tons of companies want to take these problems away from you, and all they ask is some money for their trouble. These companies are called web hosting services or web presence providers, and this chapter examines the ins and outs of working with them. The terms web hosting service and web presence provider will be used interchangeably throughout the chapter because when you begin searching for one, you'll find they're referred to as both.

Tip

You can find a long list of web hosting services tailored for Microsoft FrontPage users (they have the FrontPage server extensions installed) on Microsoft's FrontPage Web site at http://microsoft.saltmine.com/frontpage/wpp/list/. Another excellent site, and one that rates hosting services, can be found at http://webhostlist.internetlist.com/.
