Special Concerns

Several considerations regarding graphic file formats should be discussed before moving on to other aspects of Web page creation. These include using lo-res images, splitting large images into several smaller ones, using the Web palette, and working with optimization tools.

Using Lo-Res Images

As an alternate to progressive rendering, consider this approach. FrontPage supports, in the Picture Properties dialog box, a lo-res alternate to any image. This lo-res alternate loads before the actual image loads. If you can create a compressed or black and white version of the actual image, it will give visitors something akin to the image to look at while the actual image is downloaded.
