What Are Style Sheets?

A style sheet is a page styling template you create yourself; it embeds special commands within HTML formatting tags to specify the appearance of a Web page or pages. Style sheets provide

  • More complex formatting capabilities, especially greater control over text appearance and placement. These formatting effects can be achieved without complex and awkward HTML workarounds.

  • More flexible and simpler control of the formatting across multiple pages. You don't need to turn tags on and off to change the look of individual page elements, and the reduced number of tags makes your HTML code much easier to read and follow.

  • Fast changes to the formatting of a page or pages, by changing a few parameters in a linked style sheet. This lets you make major changes to the appearance of a whole site, without the drudgery of modifying every page the site contains.

  • Greater potential for sophisticated page design, based on a style sheet standard that all browsers will (eventually) be able to recognize.
