How to Use JavaScript

Before continuing, it is imperative to clarify that although this chapter concentrates on JavaScript, many of the rules about using scripts apply no matter what language is used. Even though the language is syntactically different, many of the same principles hold if you are using VBScript. This book concentrates more on JavaScript's use because in its standardized form, it is the language that is most likely supported on the widest variety of Web browsers. Although you can use additional languages such as VBScript at your discretion, many are not supported in every version of Web browsers.

Another important point to make is that since JavaScript is embedded within the HTML for a Web page, you can edit it with a variety of tools. This chapter concentrates on the use of FrontPage 2000 as an editing tool for JavaScript logic. In this section you see how Microsoft's tools can help you create scripts quickly and easily, even if you are not an advanced programmer.
