The Problems with Serving Your Own Webs

Web server software is widely available, and if you look around the download sites you'll even find some excellent packages that are free. You can download the Microsoft Personal Web Server for free if you use Win95/98, and if you buy Windows NT 4.0 or the upcoming Windows 2000 (NT 5.0), you'll get Web server software with it. If you want to get away from Microsoft's platforms completely, you can get Linux (the UNIX clone that runs on PCs) either through free downloads or at minimal cost from companies such as RedHat or Caldera. The Apache server comes with the packages and can be downloaded free.

Why not set up your own server? Lots of reasons, actually. Here are a number of them, and you can decide which ones apply to you.
