Using DHTML Layout and Positioning

Until recently, web authors had to rely on some rather crude layout tools: floating alignments, paragraph alignment, and tables. These are not precise enough to satisfy graphics professionals, and it was only a matter of time until something better was introduced.

The "something better" is CSS (page 272) layout and positioning. These tools are actually part of the CSS specification, but they are so often considered part of the DHTML toolkit that they're examined in this chapter. This is all the more suitable because the layout and positioning tools lend themselves to creating dynamic effects through scripting.
