Chapter 35. Introduction to Web Hosting ... > Server Administration and Server Ext...

Server Administration and Server Extensions

Even though FrontPage ships with fully functional Web server software, FrontPage's Server Administration tools do not actually control the Personal Web Server; instead, they provide an interface to whatever Web server software you happen to be running. You can still use Server Administration if you're running O'Reilly's WebSite, the Netscape FastTrack or Enterprise Servers, or the NCSA UNIX server, although you will do so in conjunction with the Server Administration tools provided by that server.

What does FrontPage Server Administration do? It primarily exists as a means of installing FrontPage's server extensions so that FrontPage's features work smoothly with your existing server. All Web servers ship with server administration tools, but in all cases these tools let you configure only that particular server. FrontPage Server Administrator, on the other hand, works hand in hand with a wide number of popular servers, with more to be added by Microsoft as the product matures. FrontPage accomplishes this task through the use of server extensions, which (as their name suggests) extend FrontPage's capabilities to other Web server software.
