Word 2000's Web Tools

Since Microsoft realized the importance of the Web and began to reorganize itself as an Internet company, it has explored the opportunity of utilizing Word as a Web page editing tool. It started in Word 95 with an add-on tool called the Internet Assistant. It made Word a rudimentary Web browser and provided limited Web page creation capabilities. It was a crude effort at best.

In Word 97, the option to save the file as an HTML document was built right into the program but still offered, at best, the simplest of options for Web development. Hyperlinking from within a Word document was made easier with the addition of a Web toolbar, but that and a few Web page design wizards was all that the program offered in terms of Web design.
