IIS 4

Now that you've looked at the roots of Internet Information Server, you can focus on the newest incarnation—IIS 4. If you aren't running IIS 4, many of the issues involved in IIS 4 are present in earlier versions as well.

Microsoft released the much-awaited Windows NT 4 Option Pack in early 1998. The Windows NT Option Pack was more than just a new Web server—it was more akin to a major upgrade of IIS 4 than to some new applications. The Option Pack introduced the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), which allows for the development of snap-ins, which control various services and applications. The MMC offers a uniform feel to managing services such as IIS 4, Microsoft SQL Server 7, Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5, and the FrontPage 2000 server extensions. The MMC is a preview of features that are being fully incorporated into Windows 2000.
