IIS 3 and PWS 3

Because IIS 3 and its cousin the Personal Web Server 3 are the minimal requirements for the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions we'll review a little about IIS 3. Although this chapter is geared towards IIS 4, much of the material will be applicable to IIS 3 users who haven't upgraded yet.

IIS 3 was released as an upgrade to IIS 2 and was available on the Windows NT Service Pack 3 CD-ROM as well as for download at http://www.microsoft.com/iis/. IIS 3 added major functionality to IIS, including Active Server Pages (page 878) (ASP) for server-side scripting, Index Server 1.1 for cataloging documents, and Crystal Reports for generating reports from the IIS log files. Even though IIS 3 lacked an advanced user interface and some management features found in Apache and Netscape Enterprise, it was a major step forward for Microsoft's vision of distributed computing.
