Tips for Quality Pages

Web authoring is still a young art, but already there is some agreement about its basic principles. The following guidelines list the fundamentals of text layout and hyperlink design.

  • Use lots of white space on a text-heavy page.

  • Avoid very long pages that require endless scrolling.

  • Give your page a title that helps the user figure out where she is and what she's looking at.

  • Write clearly and pay close attention to spelling and grammar. Nothing undermines a page's authority as much as confused language and bad spelling. Even typos suggest that the author couldn't be bothered to check the work, and what does that say about the other information that's offered?

  • If you modify the colors of unvisited and visited links, test the results very carefully to make sure the two states can be distinguished in any display the viewers are likely to use. When in doubt, keep the link colors at their defaults.

  • Keep your navigation controls uniform in appearance; for example, a go-to-home-page button should look the same everywhere on your site.
