Server-Side Components

By now you have a good understanding of what Active Server Pages can do for your Web site and how it can enhance your development abilities. The reality is that as good as ASP is for some applications, it is insufficient for very highly accessed or very complex Web sites. For such sites, Microsoft encourages the use of another technology: server-side objects.

You will recall from your previous database examples that an ASP must make use of the ADODB.Connection object in order to attach to a database connection. Database capabilities are not inherent in ASP and must therefore rely on the use of external objects to create an application your ASP application. This makes Active Server Pages a very extensible environment because there is no reason these external objects must be database connections only. In fact, they can be objects that accomplish any variety of tasks. For instance, your Active Server Page file could invoke an object that routes electronic mail, retrieves additional information, or performs tasks specific to your organization.
