Designers Corner

So far, you've seen examples of how to write macros and programs using VBA and VB, but what else can you do with the programmability of Office 2000? Companies using Internet Information Server as a web server can leverage this programmability on the server itself. Since the server only requires one licensed copy of the product, this can leverage some of the programming power of Office 2000 for a fraction of the price.

Internet Information Servers uses a technology called Active Server Pages to allow both script and HTML to co-exist within the same document. ASP is quickly gaining momentum as one of the most popular forms of script writing because it uses VBScript, a subset of the Visual Basic language, as its default programming language. The other beauty of ASP is it is easily extensible through the use of COM objects, just like Word, Outlook, FrontPage and the rest of the Office 2000 suite of products.
