Chapter 10. Creating Pages with FrontPag... > Understanding Templates Folders

Understanding Templates Folders

As indicated, FrontPage stores your custom templates in their own folders in the C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\ FrontPage\Pages folder. When you save an HTML page as a template, its unique folder is created with the name you assigned to the template. Unlike most folder names, this one has an extension, TEM (for template, obviously). It's this extension that makes the template accessible through the New command, and if it isn't there, the template won't appear in the New Page list box.

The template file, which is simply an HTML file, is within the folder. The template folder name must match this file's name. An INF file is also in the folder. This is a text file storing the name and description of the template, as well as the path names of any separate files (such as image files) required by the template file. There's no official limit on the number of templates you can have; the unofficial limit is probably as large as your hard drive has room for.
