Understanding Programmed Components

The fact that computers deliver Web pages on demand and display them interactively means that computer programming instructions can be inserted at any step of the process: when storing pages to the server, when processing Web visitor requests, when delivering requested pages, or when displaying the pages. This flexibility is one of the significant differences between the Web and other mass media. Newspapers, magazines, books, radio, and television all provide very little interactivity or opportunities for customization.
