Chapter 27. Displaying Derived Content > Using the Hit Counter Component

Using the Hit Counter Component

Simple hit counters are a favorite way to measure visits to a given Web page—and to publicly brag (or moan) about the results. Hit counters involve three components:

  • A count kept in a small file on the Web server. For FrontPage, this is a file in the_private folder of your Web site.

  • A program on the Web server that increments the count and creates a displayable version for output. For FrontPage, this is part of Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services or the FrontPage Server Extensions.

  • HTML that triggers the server-side program and indicates where to insert the displayable output. This is what the Hit Counter component in FrontPage creates.
