Lesson 2. Getting Started with Publisher > Deciding How to Create a New Publica...

Deciding How to Create a New Publication

As already mentioned, when you first open the Publisher window, the Publisher Catalog appears (see Figure 2.3). The Catalog window provides you with three tabs that supply you with three different ways to create a new publication:

  • Publications by Wizard The Publication Wizard provides you with a step-by-step process to creating a new publication. The wizard asks you questions, and the new publication is built based on your answers. A large number of wizard-based publications are available in a series of publication categories. For instance, when you click Invitations in the Wizards pane of the Catalog window, you are provided with thumbnail previews of several different invitation types. You select the invitation type you want to create and then click the Start Wizard button to begin the publication creation process. Creating a publication using a wizard is discussed in detail in Lesson 3, "Creating a New Publication."

  • Publications by Design Design sets enable you to create a family of publications that have the same look. Each master design set uses a particular set of design elements and colors that are consistent across all the publications in the set. For instance, you might want to create letterhead, business cards, and invoices that all have the same design look for your small business. You can create these publications by choosing a design set in the Design Sets pane and then selecting the particular publication (such as the business cards) in the Master Sets window. You then start the publication creation process by clicking the Start Wizard button. Using and understanding design sets is discussed in Lesson 4, "Using Design Sets and Templates."

  • Blank Publications A third possibility for creating your new publication is to create your publication from scratch. However, Publisher doesn't totally abandon you when you take this approach. The Blank Publications tab actually provides a number of blank templates that help you with the initial layout and page orientation of the new publication. For instance, if you want to create a side fold card, you can select the side fold card template on the Blank Publications tab. After you select a template, you then click the Create button. The techniques used to create blank publications are discussed in many of the lessons in this book. These techniques also apply to editing existing publications.
