Changing the background color of a text frame

A clear color code will help organize the content so that readers can quickly recognize the different sections of the newsletter. This section shows you how to create colorful headlines for the table of contents on the left side of page 1.

You will use the color swatches you have created in Lesson 1, to define the five sections of the newsletter.

Choose Load Swatches from the Swatches palette menu. In the Open a File dialog box, navigate to the Lesson04 folder, select the Basics_CMYK.ase file, and click open. The color swatches will be appended to your list of swatches in the Swatches palette.

Use the Type tool to create a small text frame (you will assign the exact dimensions in step 5) in the white area to the left of page 1.

Select the text frame with the Selection tool.

In the Control palette, make sure the Constrain proportions for width & height icon is deselected (the icon will then display a broken chain), so you can freely assign width and height values for the frame in the next step.

In the Control palette, set the width of the text frame to 10p6 (10 picas 6 points) and the height to 2p6.

With the frame still selected, make sure Fill is active in the toolbox, and then click the Basics Blue color swatch in the Swatches palette.

The background color of the text frame will change to the specified color.

Select the Type tool, and then click inside this colored text frame. Using the font Myriad Pro Bold in 24 pt, type NEWS in all caps with the text color set to white (called [Paper] in the Swatches palette).

To center the text horizontally, select Align center in the Paragraph palette.

To center the text vertically in the frame, select the frame with the Selection tool, and then select Align center in the Control palette. (See illustration on next page.)

Save the changes.
