Adding line art

Using one of InDesign's drawing tools, you will now draw a horizontal line to visually separate the masthead from the stories on the page.

1.
Select the Line tool from the toolbox.

2.
Use the Info palette or the Control palette to help position the pointer at 3 picas from left and 20 picas from top, and then click and start dragging to the right. While dragging, hold down the Shift key to constrain the direction of the line you are drawing (holding down the shift key constrains the drawing of lines to horizontals, verticals, and 45° diagonals). Once the pointer is close enough to 48 picas from left and 20 picas from top, release the mouse button, and then release the Shift key.

3.
With the line still selected, choose 0.5 pt from the line width pop-up menu in the Control palette.

The Control palette also enables you to change other attributes of the line, like the location on the page, or the line length, or choose from a list of line styles: single, double, dashed or dotted, in many variations. If desired, the stroke color of the line can be changed using the toolbox, and the Color and Swatches palettes.

A. Click here to activate Stroke. B. Click here to apply color, and then pick the color from the Color or Swatches palette.
