Lesson 7. Working with Styles > Globally updating styles

Globally updating styles

There are two ways to update object, character, or paragraph styles in InDesign. The first is simply to open the style itself and make changes to the formatting options, as you did when you created a nested style in the previous exercise. Because there’s a parent-child relationship between the style and the instance(s) in which it’s applied, all instances are updated to reflect a modified style.

The other way to update object, character, or paragraph styles is to use local formatting to change an instance, and then redefine the style based on that instance. In this exercise, you’ll make a change to the Shadow object style by using local formatting to redefine the style.
