Lesson 7. Working with Styles > Nesting character styles inside paragraph style...

Nesting character styles inside paragraph styles

To make the use of styles more convenient and powerful for you, InDesign provides for the nesting of character formatting within paragraph styles. These nested styles allow you to apply character formatting to portions of a paragraph, whether it’s the first character, the second word, or the third sentence. This makes nested styles ideal for applying to run-in headings (where the first portion of a line or paragraph is styled differently from the rest of the line or paragraph), structured paragraphs, or as you’re about to see, drop caps.

Creating a paragraph style for nesting

The two prerequisites for using nested styles are that you have first created a character style, and that you then have built a paragraph style in which to nest it. Since you created the Logo character style earlier in this lesson, your next step is to build a new paragraph style in which to nest that style.
