Lesson 4. Importing and Editing Text > Automatically correcting misspelled word...

Automatically correcting misspelled words

InDesign’s Autocorrect utility takes the concept of checking spelling dynamically to the next level. With this function activated, InDesign automatically corrects misspelled words as you type them. Changes made are based on an internal list of commonly misspelled words and their correct spellings. This list can also be changed to include commonly misspelled words in other languages.

1.
Before activating this feature, choose Edit > Preferences > Autocorrect (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Autocorrect (Mac OS). Make sure that the Enable Autocorrect box is checked. You can also choose to automatically correct capitalization errors by checking this option.

2.
Note the list of commonly misspelled words, and the Language listed by default as English: USA. Change the language to French and note the commonly misspelled words in that language. Change the language back to English: USA before proceeding.

3.
Click the Add button to bring up the Add to Autocorrect List dialog box. Type the word snew in the Misspelled Word field, and snow into the Correction field. Click OK and then click OK on the Preferences dialog box.

4.
Now type the word snew into the first column on page 1 again to see the Autocorrect feature in action.
