Lesson 4. Importing and Editing Text > Checking Spelling dynamically

Checking Spelling dynamically

It’s not necessary for you to wait until a document is finished before checking its spelling. InDesign incorporates a Dynamic Spelling utility that allows you to see misspelled words as they are entered. If you turn on Dynamic Spelling after text has been entered, all misspellings will be highlighted.

1.
Before activating this feature, choose Edit > Preferences > Spelling (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Spelling (Mac OS). Make sure that the Enable Dynamic Spelling box is checked. Then decide which errors you want highlighted (in the Find section), and how you want them highlighted (in the Underline Color section). Close the Preference dialog box and return to your document. (Misspelled words, according to the default user dictionary, are immediately highlighted with a red underline.)

Note

To disable Dynamic Spelling, choose Edit > Spelling > Dynamic Spelling.

Words that are not in the dictionary are underlined when Dynamic Spelling is enabled.

2.
If you add a misspelled word to the document with Dynamic Spelling activated, the word becomes highlighted with an underline as you type it. Try typing the word “snew” into the first column on page 1 to see this feature in action.
