Lesson 4. Importing and Editing Text > Adding words to a dictionary

Adding words to a dictionary

If you choose to simply Ignore All instances of a word, it will ignore only the misspelling until InDesign is restarted. Adding the word to an external user dictionary will prevent it from repeatedly being identified as misspelled in other InDesign documents.

1.
Close your newsletter document, and then quit and restart InDesign.

2.
Choose File > Open, and open 04_News from the Lesson_04 folder.

3.
On page 1, click the cursor before the word “This” in the first paragraph. Choose Edit > Spelling > Check Spelling to open the Check Spelling dialog box.

4.
From the Search menu, choose Document to check the spelling in the entire newsletter document.

5.
Click Start to find the first misspelled word in the document. The word “TravelNEws” will appear in the Not In Dictionary field.

6.
Click the Add button to add this word to the external user dictionary file, ENG.UDC. Since this dictionary is application-wide, InDesign will recognize “TravelNEws” as correctly spelled in all future documents.

Adding words to a document-specific dictionary

You may occasionally want to link the specific spelling of a word to a single document only. Storing a word in an open InDesign document’s internal dictionary restricts it to that document.

1.
Choose Edit > Spelling > Dictionary. Note that the Target dictionary is the default ENG.UDC, and “TravelNEws” is listed under Dictionary List: Added Words. To remove the word from the external user dictionary, select it in the list, and then click on the Remove button.

2.
From the Target menu, scroll down to select your file’s name, 04_News.

3.
Type the word TravelNEws into the Word field, and click the Add button. The word is added to the Dictionary List for this document only. This spelling of the word will be recognized only within this document, and subsequent InDesign documents will continue to list the word as misspelled. Click Done.

Note

To include the capitalization of the characters, select Case Sensitive when adding words to the dictionary.
