Paragraph Rules

Paragraph rules are a paragraph attribute which places lines above, below, and sometimes through the text of a paragraph. You can add a paragraph rule using a dialog box or in a paragraph style. In InDesign, select one or more paragraphs with the Type tool, and then choose Paragraph Rule from the Paragraph or Control palette’s flyout menu (or press Command-Option-J/Ctrl-Alt-J). The Paragraph Rules dialog box appears. Unfortunately, while InDesign allows you to set both a Rule Above and a Rule Below in the same paragraph, you must select one or the other from the popup menu, and you can only look at the settings for one at a time.

In InDesign, you can set the Weight, Line Type, Color, Tint, Gap Color and Tint. InDesign lets you use any color you’ve created in the Swatches palette, including gradients, and to set overprinting strokes.
