Applying Styles

Applying paragraph and character styles using InDesign is very similar to both QuarkXPress and PageMaker. To apply a paragraph style, simply place the text cursor in a paragraph and then click on the name of the style in the Paragraph Styles palette (or choose from the style popup menu in the Control palette). Character styles take a bit more care to apply. As in XPress, you must first select the exact range of characters you want to change, and then select the style to be applied from the Character Styles or Control palette.

You can also press a keyboard shortcut to apply a style if you’ve created a shortcut. With InDesign, you define keyboard shortcuts for styles using the Shortcut field in the General panel of the Modify Paragraph (or Character) Style Options dialog box. Note that InDesign only lets you combine a number on the numeric keypad with one or more modifier keys (such as Shift).
