Import Filters

InDesign can import text files from recent versions of Microsoft Word and Excel, files in Rich Text Format (RTF—a common interchange format), and tagged text format files.

As with PageMaker or QuarkXPress, for InDesign to be able to bring in data from another file format, it must have an import filter for that format. For text, word processing and RTF files, InDesign brings in most paragraph and character attributes and ignores most page layout information. It also imports paragraph and character styles if they’re saved with the document. InDesign can also directly import tables from Microsoft Word documents and Excel spreadsheets from Office 97/98 and later versions (we discuss how to create tables in Chapter 35).
