Chapter 21. Checking Spelling and Using ... > Foreign Languages and Dictionaries

Foreign Languages and Dictionaries

InDesign takes a very international point of view: Out of the box, it includes 20 dictionaries for 12 languages which are used for spell-checking and hyphenation. (However, to use languages beyond those included—like Japanese or Hebrew—you must purchase a special language edition of InDesign.) The extra dictionaries are installed by default.

Applying Language to Text

InDesign sees language as a character attribute. That means you can select any amount of text you want with the Type tool and choose a language in the Language popup menu on the Character or Control palette. You can also set a character or paragraph style to a specific language. (We discuss character formatting in Chapter 22 and we explore paragraph and character styles in Chapter 26.)
