Chapter 3. Text > Text Files and File Linking

Text Files and File Linking

When you imported a text file (or a Microsoft Word file, or anything else from disk) in InDesign 2, the publication maintained a link to the text file itself, and added the link to the Links palette (to display the Links palette, press Command-Shift-D/Ctrl-Shift-D or choose Links from the File menu). This is similar to what programs have done for many years with graphics. If you later edited the Microsoft Word document (or RTF file, or whatever), InDesign recognized that it had changed and let you update the file.

Today, you have the option of linking to text files on disk or not. You can choose by turning on or off the Create Links When Placing Text and Spreadsheet Files option in the Text Preferences dialog box. (Is it just us, or are these feature names getting longer?)
