Working with Images

We don’t think too much about the process of taking a photograph, scanning it, incorporating it into a page layout, printing color separations of the publication, and then printing it on a commercial offset printing press. But it’s an amazing process.

First you record the visible light that’s bouncing off of physical objects. To do this, you use a lens to project the light onto a piece of film that’s coated with a chemical compound that changes on contact with light. After you expose the film to some other chemicals, an image appears. Next, you turn the photographic image into pixels using a scanner. Or you skip the film altogether and take the picture with a digital camera.
