Chapter 19. Web Layouts > Creating meta tags

Creating meta tags

Where they're stored

If a set is created using the Meta Tags command when a Web layout is open, that set will be stored only with that layout. If a set is created when no projects are open, it will be stored as a default in the XPress Preferences file.

Meta Tags, like all the commands listed on the lower half of the Edit menu, follow this directive: Settings that are chosen when a project is open will be stored only with that project; settings that are chosen when no projects are open become the defaults for future projects.

When generating a search list and indexing Web pages, Web search engines use the first lines of text on a Web page as the description for that page. Attaching a meta tag to a Web page—an HTML tag that describes the content of the page—gives you control over what text a search engine will examine, and helps prevent your page from being described and categorized incorrectly. If your Web page is properly described and indexed on a search list, Web users will be able to find your site more readily via the search engine, and hopefully more traffic will be attracted to your site.
