Chapter 7. Typography > Hanging punctuation

Hanging punctuation

If you're setting text that starts or ends with punctuation and that is larger or more noticeable than standard body text (a pull quote in an article, for example, or a quotation on a book jacket), the paragraph alignment will be more pleasing if the punctuation hangs outside the main body of the text.

Breaking a rule

With the Orthogonal Line tool, draw a line. Use Item > Step & Repeat (Cmd-Option-D/Ctrl-Alt-D) to make horizontal duplicates (0 Vertical Offset), and then lengthen or shorten the lines, as needed.
