Chapter 1. The Basics > Projects and layouts

Projects and layouts

What's an HTML text box?

When we refer to HTML text boxes throughout the book, we mean text boxes in Web layouts for which the Convert to Graphic on Export box is unchecked in the Item > Modify dialog box.

Just as a welcome innovation freed QuarkXPress users from the confines of constraining boxes over a decade ago, version 6 introduces an equally significant innovation: projects and multiple layouts. What were previously called “documents” are now called “projects.”[*] Each project, in turn, can hold one or more “layouts” . Each layout has its own Layout Properties settings (width, height, margin guides, column guides, etc.) and its own output medium (print or Web). Text can even be synchronized across multiple layouts, making it easy to standardize content between print and Web work (see Chapter 21).

[*] The words “file” and “project” are interchangeable.
