To modify the halftoning used by QuarkXPress:

Read all about it

To learn more about the complicated world of color separation, see one of the many useful reference books available, such as Real World Color Management by Bruce Fraser, Fred Bunting, and Chris Murphy (Peachpit Press).

1.
Choose File > Print and then, in the Layout pane, check Separations.

2.
Click the Output tab .

Select a plate or plates, then choose settings for that plate from the Halftone, Frequency, Angle, and Function drop-down menus, as per your output service provider's instructions.

3.
From the Plates pop-up menu (not the Plate column):

Choose Used Process & Spot to choose halftoning options for only the process and spot colors that are being used in the layout.

or

Choose Convert to Process to convert all spot colors in the file to process colors.

or

Choose All Process & Spot to choose half toning options for all colors— process, spot, and RGB.

4.
Turn the printing of any individual plate on or off by checking or unchecking its box in the Print column.

5.
Click the name of the plate (or plates) that you want to choose halftoning settings for, and then, as per your output service provider's instructions, choose settings from the Frequency, Angle, and Function drop-down menus. Each spot color is assigned the screen values of one of the four process colors. Via the Halftone drop-down menu, you can apply screen values from another process color to the currently selected spot color.

6.
Choose other print settings, then click Print.
