Chapter 24. Print > What's a PPD?

What's a PPD?

Where your PPDs are

It's a good idea to leave the PPDs in the default location for your platform so they can be found and accessed by all your applications, including QuarkXPress. In Mac OS X, dozens of PPDs are installed in folders in Library/Printers/PPDs. QuarkXPress creates a PPD folder in the user's library: [User Name]/Library/Preferences/Quark/QuarkXPress 6.0/PPD. QuarkXPress also looks for PPDs in the Classic System folder and the root level Library folder.

In Windows, PPDs are stored in systemroot\System32\Spool\ Drivers\ W32x8613.

Changes made using the PPD Manager affect only QuarkXPress—not other applications.

A PPD, short for PostScript Printer Description, is a text file that contains information about a particular PostScript printer's parameters (how's that for alliteration?), such as its default resolution, usable paper and page sizes, and PostScript version number.
