Chapter 10. Multiple Items > Grouping items

Grouping items

Grouped items remain associated and move as a unit unless they're ungrouped. In this book, each picture is grouped with its accompanying caption, and in some cases multiple picture/caption groups are themselves grouped together (nested) to form a larger group. Individual items in a group always remain editable.

To group items:

1.
Choose the Item or Content tool.

2.
Shift-click each item to be grouped (any item type except a table). (Shift-click any selected item to deselect it.)

or

Position the cursor outside all the items to be included in the group, then drag a marquee around them. You need to drag over only a portion of all the items—just make sure to grab at least one handle on each item.

3.
Choose Item > Group (Cmd-G/Ctrl-G). Items stay on their original layers.

Note: Use the Content tool to modify the size or contents of an item in a group. If the group is already selected , deselect it by clicking outside it, then with the Content tool, click the item you want to edit.

A dotted bounding box surrounds a selected group.
