Chapter 16. Layers >  Locking layers

Locking layers

Locking a layer has a stronger effect than locking an individual item (see page 186), and it works differently in QuarkXPress version 6 than it did in version 5. Locked layers are more, well, locked. Objects on a locked layer can't be selected, budged, or unlocked individually. You can't create new items on a locked layer, or select items on a locked layer by any method (clicking, Cmd-Option-Shift/Ctrl-Alt-Shift clicking, marqueeing, or Edit > Select All). Locking a layer also seals it off, meaning items can't be moved into it or out of it.

Choosing layer preferences

  • You can specify whether future layers will be locked automatically by checking or unchecking Locked in QuarkXPress (Edit, in Windows) > Preferences > Print Layout or Web Layout > Layers. In the same dialog box, you can also choose whether new layers will be visible or printable, and whether their current Runaround setting will be preserved even when obstructing items are hidden.

  • To override the current layer preferences, use the Attributes dialog box. Open it by double-clicking a layer name.
