Part 10: Printing > Trapping

Chapter 97. Trapping

Trapping is the process of compensating for the fact that printing presses sometimes misregister, creating unsightly gaps between areas of adjacent colored inks. When a trap is created, objects on the page overlap a tiny amount to prevent the white gaps. While newer presses and processes like direct-to-plate may somewhat reduce the need for trapping, creating traps will be part of the printing process for the foreseeable future.

In QuarkXPress, there are two ways to trap—you can create color-by-color automatic trapping in the Trapping preferences, and you can create object-level trapping which can be applied to XPress-created items using the Trap Information palette. However, QuarkXPress cannot handle trapping objects like blends, cannot choke type, and cannot handle the trapping of items which touch multiple colors. It also can’t trap colors in placed graphics. Many printing professionals turn off XPress trapping, and use professional trapping software instead.
