Chapter 58. Importing Styles > Importing Styles from Word Files

Importing Styles from Word Files

If you apply styles to your text while using a word processing program such as Microsoft Word, when you Place the text file into InDesign, the styles will come along, too. If the InDesign file doesn’t have styles with the same names, then placing the text file imports those styles automatically.

Note that when you import text, you have the choice of turning on the Retain Format option in the Place dialog box (see Figure 58-1). When this is on, InDesign applies the formatting to the imported text (including applying the appropriate paragraph and character styles). When you turn it off, InDesign still imports the styles, but it won’t apply them to the text; instead, it applies whatever paragraph style happens to be selected in the Paragraph Styles palette at that moment.
