Adding or Removing Words

InDesign handles dictionaries for spell checking and hyphenation differently than QuarkXPress. In XPress, you can’t add or change words in its standard dictionary. Instead, you must first create or open an auxiliary dictionary. Then, when spell-checking, XPress uses both dictionaries. To change the way QuarkXPress hyphenates words, you can enter words in its Hyphenation Exceptions dialog box; this information is stored in the XPress Preferences file and is applied globally to all documents.

In InDesign, you add or remove words using the Dictionary dialog box (see Figure 42-2), which you can get to by selecting Dictionary from the Edit menu or by clicking the Add button in the Check Spelling dialog box (see Chapter 41). If you have a word selected in your text or the Check Spelling dialog box, it appears in the Word field—or you can just type one in. Then fill out the other settings in the Dictionary dialog box:
