Chapter 52. Find and Change > Specifying the Text

Specifying the Text

After setting the search range, type or paste the characters to be searched for in the Find What field. InDesign remembers the last 15 searches you’ve performed, and you can select them in the Previous Search popup menu (just to the right of the field). If you want to replace characters, type or paste the characters into the Change To field. This field also has a Previous Search menu with previous replacement characters.

Special Characters

In QuarkXPress, if you want to search for special characters like a Tab or a New Paragraph, you must remember the code to type in the Find What or Change To fields, or a keystroke. In InDesign, to search and replace these kinds of special characters, you can choose them from the Metacharacter popup menu, to the right of the Find What and Change To fields. If you’re really into codes, InDesign supports those, too (see Table 52-1).
