Chapter 57. Editing Styles > Redefining styles

Redefining styles

While XPress insists that you change style definitions in a dialog box, InDesign is more flexible. You can actually change a style right on your document page. Select some text that is tagged with the paragraph or character style you want to change, then apply local formatting to it. Make sure the text insertion point is in the paragraph with the replacement formatting, then choose Redefine Style from the flyout menu on the Paragraph Styles or Character Styles palette. Or quicker: press Command-Option-Shift-R/Ctrl-Alt-Shift-R to redefine the paragraph style and Command-Option-Shift-C/Ctrl-Alt-Shift-C to redefine the character style.
