Chapter 99. Creating PDF Files > An Alternative to Exporting

An Alternative to Exporting

Note that you can still use Acrobat Distiller to create PDF files from InDesign. The two-step approach of printing a PostScript file to disk and then having the print-to-disk file processed by Distiller is time consuming, but sometimes worthwhile. When creating very small PDF files is our highest priority we use Acrobat Distiller—just as we would from QuarkXPress—because InDesign’s Export feature almost always makes larger PDF files than Distiller (though this depends partly on the Export PDF options or Distiller Job settings you choose).

Sometimes InDesign’s directly exported PDF files won’t print on some printers (primarily non-Adobe PostScript emulators, or “clones”). In these cases, we also use the Distiller to create the PDF files. Of course, as we write this Adobe does not yet have an OS X-native version of Distiller, so we have to endure working with InDesign in Mac OS X, then switching to the Classic mode to process our files. On a side note, this nuisance has Christopher using Dell Pentium 4 laptop more than his G4 PowerBook—but he can happily report that InDesign shares files seamlessly between Mac and PC!
